What is eMBMS

LTE Broadcast or eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) provides an answer to part of the mobile operators’ challenges in geo-targeted mass multimedia broadcast services. Simply put, LTE Broadcast (eMBMS) enables the same content to be delivered to a large number of users at the same time, resulting in a more efficient use of network resources when compared to each user receiving the same content individually. E.g. if a thousand people individually receive the same 1MB video file over a network, the result could be as much as a 1,000 MB load on the network. With eMBMS, that same video could be delivered to one thousand users while only placing a few MB load on the network by using the Single Frequency Network (SFN) broadcast capability within LTE. eMBMS can therefore be used to efficiently distribute content such as: Live events and media, background file and software, group information distribution, multimedia public alerts and warnings and much more to broad audiences.

A big advantage of using broadcast transmission over LTE is that the same content can be received by many users simultaneously. The bandwidth consumption is not dependent on the number of simultaneous users, but on the number of simultaneous channels that the operator wishes to broadcast. Within the amount of bandwidth earmarked for broadcasting, operators have full control over the content to be broadcast.

Once deployed, LTE Broadcast can be used for multiple use cases and allows MNOs to offer new products and services directly to consumers, and enhances their role in the value chain. MNOs can use and monetize their media and network assets and establish relationships with content and media partners for new services. From an ROI perspective, revenue generation and cost-savings opportunities are substantial and provide an attractive value proposition for MNOs.
